Is The Bible Opposed to Abortion?

Since the church is generally opposed to abortion, people tend to assume that the Bible is likewise opposed. However, this is not the case. The Bible never directly weighs in on the topic. Here is my short video addressing this fact. Following are verses related to the topic, but not explicitly addressing it.

Bible verses related to abortion.

Numbers 5:27–28 (ESV): And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children.

Exodus 21:22–25 (ESV): 22 “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Numbers 3:40–43 (ESV): And the Lord said to Moses, “List all the firstborn males of the people of Israel, from a month old and upward, taking the number of their names. 41 And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the people of Israel.” 42 So Moses listed all the firstborn among the people of Israel, as the Lord commanded him. 43 And all the firstborn males, according to the number of names, from a month old and upward as listed were 22,273.

Genesis 2:7 (ESV): 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

The Didache on abortion.

By contrast, the Didache has a very strong passage against abortion.

Do not abort a child or kill babies.

Further thoughts on the topic:

After I posted the first video, I got some questions about my assessment of Numbers 5 and the Jealousy Law. Here was my response to that.

@biblicalanarchy

Replying to @zscottycat32475 Numbers 5 is abortion-ish. lol.
